Why an Ethical Portfolio Matters
A portfolio is your showcase. For cleaning, renovation, auto repair, or beauty services, it demonstrates quality and builds trust. But publishing photos of someone else's space, car, or face without permission violates privacy and can lead to conflicts. An ethical approach protects you and your clients.
How to Get Client Consent
Always ask for permission before shooting. Written consent is best, but a confirmation in a messenger works too. In the consent, specify:
- that photos will be used in your portfolio and on classifieds listings;
- whether faces can be shown (or should be hidden);
- whether the address or district can be mentioned (usually better to avoid exact address);
- duration of use (e.g., indefinite or one year).
If a client refuses, respect their decision. You can offer anonymous photos or only details without recognizable elements.
How to Shoot a Photo Series
A single photo rarely conveys the scope of work. Shoot a series:
- Before/after — same angle and lighting to make the difference obvious.
- Wide shot — shows the scale (e.g., the whole room after cleaning).
- Details — close-ups of tricky areas: clean corner, even tiles, polished body, neat manicure.
- Process — if the client agrees, a few shots during work add authenticity.
For renovation, always shoot before, during, and after. For auto, take before/after from different sides. For beauty, macro shots before and after the procedure (no retouching to avoid misleading).
What to Write in Case Descriptions
The caption should be informative but concise. Structure:
- Task — what the client asked for (e.g., “clean an apartment after renovation”).
- Solution — what you did (products, techniques, steps).
- Result — what was achieved (clean, streak-free, delivered on time).
- Specifics — any special aspects: tough stains, time constraints, delicate materials.
Example for cleaning: “Deep cleaning after renovation. Removed paint stains from laminate, washed windows, disinfected the bathroom. Client satisfied, completed in 4 hours.”
For renovation: “Cosmetic bathroom renovation. Replaced tiles, leveled walls, installed plumbing. Duration — 2 weeks, budget met.”
For auto: “Paint correction after scratches. Removed holograms, applied protective wax. Before/after photos in daylight.”
For beauty: “Facial cleansing. Removed blackheads, hydrated skin. No aggressive peels, suitable for sensitive skin.”
Niche-Specific Rules
- Cleaning — do not show personal items, documents, or medications. Shoot only clean surfaces.
- Renovation — confirm whether the full interior can be shown. Fragments are often better.
- Auto — hide license plates unless the client explicitly allows showing them.
- Beauty — do not promise medical effects (“cures acne”, “permanently removes wrinkles”). Only describe visual results and sensations.
Where to Publish Your Portfolio
Place photos in your listings on obyava.org, on social media, and on your website. In the listing, mention that you have a portfolio and provide a link. This increases trust and helps you stand out from competitors.
Remember: honesty and respect for the client are the foundation of long-term reputation. An ethical portfolio attracts more orders than hundreds of random shots.
