What Full-Text Search and Facets Are
When you type a query into the search bar, the system doesn't just look for an exact phrase. It splits the text into individual words — tokens — and matches them against ad content. This is called full-text search. Additionally, the site uses faceted filters: categories, city, price, condition, and other fields that you can refine with one click.
Why Typos and Overly General Words Hurt
Full-text search works best when words are spelled correctly. A typo turns a word into a different token, and the system may fail to find the right ad. For example, “refrigerator” and “refrigirator” are different tokens, and results may differ. Overly general words like “sell”, “buy”, “urgent” appear in almost every ad, so they don't help narrow the search. Better to use specific terms: model, brand, features.
Why You Should Fill All Fields in Your Ad
Every filled field is an additional entry point for search. If you specify brand, model, year, color, condition, your ad will be found by more queries. Faceted filters also rely on structured data: if a field is empty, the ad won't appear in that filter's selection. For example, a buyer searches for “corner sofa” and sets the filter “condition: used”. If you didn't specify condition, your ad won't show even if it matches the text.
How to Improve Ad Visibility
- Write a specific title: “Corner sofa, fabric, 200×90 cm” instead of “Sofa for sale”.
- Use synonyms and name variants: “refrigerator” and “fridge” are different tokens, but buyers may search differently.
- Fill all available fields: price, city, category, characteristics.
- Avoid filler words in the title — they don't help search.
What This Means for Buyers
The more precise your query, the faster you'll find what you need. Use filters to cut out the excess. If results are scarce, try removing one filter or fixing a typo. Understanding how search works saves time.
